Making a mark beyond
the walls of BMC

Content / Experiences

As the largest safety-net hospital in New England, Boston Medical Center has served patients through programs that transcend the scope of traditional medicine for 25 years. For health and safety reasons, however, the hospital had to hold its 25th Anniversary Gala virtually. We were determined to celebrate BMC’s incredible impact on our city, and symbolize its new community-based health equity initiatives, by making a lasting mark on the real world outside BMC’s walls.

The IDEA

Work with an artist who
goes way back with BMC

Cedric “Vise1” Douglas is an artist with a commitment to equity and social justice — and with deep connections to BMC. Cedric was born at the hospital, and his grandmother worked there after emigrating from Jamaica. That made Cedric uniquely qualified to create a meaningful work of art for BMC.

Bringing artwork into
the Boston community

Once we had our artist, we worked with BMC to find the perfect canvas: The wall of Roxbury’s new Bartlett Station, 323 units of affordable and market-rate housing and a supermarket that BMC is supporting. Cedric created a jaw-dropping mural, we documented his process, then we revealed it all during BMC’s gala.

Where there was a wall,
now there’s a way

Where others see walls, BMC sees opportunities to help their patients break through those barriers to live better, healthier lives. It’s only fitting that we permanently transformed this wall to send an inspiring message of equity and opportunity. Learn how you can support BMC’s mission.

“This mural is a fresh, creative way to celebrate BMC’s engagement and commitment to the communities we serve. By supporting economic mobility and affordable housing, we can strive for health equity and help families reach their full potential. This artwork is an indelible reminder of what we hope to accomplish by partnering with our community that will live far beyond a one-night event.”
